On October 13, 2026, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched at 6:33 a.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, creating a glowing jellyfish phenomenon visible across the eastern United States. This visual effect occurred because sunlight illuminated the rocket expanding exhaust plumes high above the atmosphere during the early morning hours as the Dragon spacecraft headed toward the International Space Station. The mission marked SpaceX's 35th commercial resupply flight for NASA, delivering vital equipment, supplies, and cutting-edge scientific investigations designed to advance space technology and medical research on Earth and in orbit. Key payloads include the final set of International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays to boost power generation capabilities. Scientific cargo aboard the Dragon spacecraft features groundbreaking medical and material experiments, such as equipment for producing artificial retinas in microgravity to help restore human vision. Additional payloads include 3D heart tissue models for large-scale drug testing, investigations into novel space-formed glass, and brain organoids to study neurological conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. This launch successfully combined a stunning atmospheric optical display with essential scientific advancements, demonstrating the ongoing value of commercial resupply missions for expanding space station power and fostering biomedical breakthroughs.
