An eight-year follow-up of the PANIC study conducted by researchers at the University of Jyväskylä investigated the relationship between childhood screen time, physical activity, and adolescent cognitive processing. Published on May 29, 2026, in Pediatric Exercise Science, the research analyzed 124 girls and 136 boys with an average age of 15.8 years to evaluate learning, attention, and working memory using the CogState test battery. The findings challenge the common assumption that all screen time is inherently harmful, revealing an unexpected positive correlation between accumulated childhood screen time and better cognitive processing during the teenage years. Doctoral Researcher Petri Jalanko emphasizes that screen use supporting active thinking, creativity, and problem-solving can be beneficial, pointing toward a balanced approach between physical and digital engagement rather than blanket restrictions. The study also uncovered distinct gender differences regarding physical activity and cognitive benefits. Among girls, greater participation in light-intensity physical activity correlated with enhanced working memory, whereas boys benefited more from guided physical activity. Interestingly, lower levels of self-reported unsupervised physical activity were associated with better adolescent cognitive processing, while combined heart rate and movement sensors showed no direct associations. Researchers caution that intervention studies are still required to establish causality and fully understand the complex variables influencing adolescent brain health. Parents and educators are advised to encourage purposeful digital engagement that fosters cognitive stimulation alongside appropriate physical activity routines to optimize youth development.
